The Devil tarot card

The Devil

Major Arcana, Earth

attachment dependency desire the material a bind

The card

Two figures stand chained to the Devil's block, and the chains hang loose around their necks. They could lift them off. They have not, and the whole card lives in that fact. This is not a picture of evil; it is a picture of a bargain someone keeps agreeing to.

The Devil governs everything that gives you a reward while taking something you cannot see being taken: the habit, the arrangement, the person, the appetite. It has real pleasure in it. That is why it works.

The Devil upright

Something has a hold on you. A dependency, an obsession, a relationship that runs on need rather than choice, a job kept for the money past the point where the money was worth it. Look at where you say 'I have no choice' and check whether that is a fact or a story.

The card is not asking you to be ashamed. Desire, ambition, appetite and the material world are all under its rule and all of them are legitimate. It only asks who is holding the leash. Enjoy the thing consciously and it is pleasure; be run by it unconsciously and it is a chain.

The Devil reversed

breaking free seeing the trap recovery relapse

Reversed, the chains come off. You see the mechanism for what it is — the bargain, the trigger, the payoff you were secretly collecting — and the seeing is most of the escape. This is a card of recovery, of leaving, of the moment shame turns into information.

The warning inside it is relapse. Freedom won once is not freedom kept, and the pull is strongest just after the break, when the old arrangement is offering to solve a problem you have not yet learned to solve another way. Be gentle with yourself and specific about what you will do instead.

🜁Thoughts

Thought fixates. The same subject returns again and again — a person, a want, a grievance — and reason is being used to justify rather than examine. There is awareness of the trap and a reluctance to act on that awareness.

🜄Feelings and relationships

Intense, physical, magnetic feeling that can be difficult to separate from need. Attraction here is real, but so is the compulsion in it. Where it strains, the bond runs on jealousy, control or the fear of being without the other person rather than the joy of being with them.

🜃Work and money

Work that pays well and costs more, a contract with a hidden hook, financial dependence, a comfortable position that has quietly become a cage. Money may be good; check what you are trading for it.
