Six of Cups
Minor Arcana, Cups, Water
The card
A child hands another child a cup filled with flowers in a walled garden. Everything in the scene is safe, smaller than adult life, and slightly too golden to be literal memory.
The Six of Cups is nostalgia and its two faces. It restores something real — the capacity for uncomplicated kindness, the warmth of people who knew you before you were impressive. And it flatters the past, which does not have to compete with anything.
Six of Cups upright
Something returns. A person from before, an old friendship, a reconciliation, a place you grew up in, a piece of your history that comes back offering warmth rather than reckoning.
There is real healing available in this. Contact with family, with children, with the parts of yourself that predate your current strategies, will do you more good right now than any new venture. Take the tenderness and the experience from the past; simply notice that you are visiting rather than moving back in.
Six of Cups reversed
Reversed, the garden becomes a place to hide. Living in memory, comparing everyone new to someone old, keeping a former relationship alive in your head where it can stay perfect because it never has to be tested.
This position often marks the moment growing up is required: an immaturity you can no longer afford, a dependence on family that has become a way of not deciding. What you loved was real. The version of it you are holding is not, and the difference is what is standing between you and anything new.
🜁Thoughts
This person is remembering you, comparing the present with the past, possibly thinking about coming back. You are associated in their mind with warmth or with a familiar emotional state.
🜄Feelings and relationships
Tenderness, trust, nostalgia, attachment. Sometimes the feeling is addressed less to the actual person than to an image from an earlier time — sincere, but not entirely about who is standing in front of them.
🜃Work and money
Returning to former work, an old client, a family business, work with children. Proven contacts help; outdated methods do not, and the difference matters.
