King of Swords tarot card

King of Swords

Minor Arcana, Swords, Air

judgement authority principle intellect impartiality

The card

He sits facing forward, sword slightly tilted, robes blue over red — thought placed above impulse. Behind him the sky is uniform and still. Two butterflies are carved into his throne, the same as the Queen's: transformation earned through mind.

The King of Swords is judgement in its finished form. He decides on principle rather than preference, and he is prepared to be unpopular in order to be correct.

King of Swords upright

A decision made on merit. Legal matters, contracts, an official ruling, expert advice, a situation resolved by someone who can set their own feelings aside long enough to see clearly.

Be that intelligence here. State the principle you are operating from, apply it consistently even where it costs you, and do not let the loudest voice in the room substitute for the strongest argument. This card also indicates a genuinely competent adviser — a lawyer, a doctor, a specialist. Seek one; this is not a situation to solve on instinct.

King of Swords reversed

dogmatism coldness abuse of authority argument as a weapon

Reversed, judgement becomes judgementalism. Principle applied without mercy, intelligence used to dominate a conversation, a person who has been right for so long that they have stopped checking. Argument as a weapon rather than a route to the truth.

There is also authority misused — advice delivered as instruction, a position exploited to settle something that should have been discussed. If this describes someone in your life, notice whether their reasoning ever ends anywhere they did not intend to arrive. If it describes you, the correction is to be genuinely persuadable about one thing this week.

🜁Thoughts

Thought is structured, principled and unsentimental. This person has weighed the situation and reached a position, and they will expect to be met with reasoning rather than with feeling.

🜄Feelings and relationships

Restrained feeling expressed through respect, reliability and clear terms rather than warmth. Strained, it becomes emotional distance — analysis where comfort was needed, and honesty delivered without kindness.

🜃Work and money

Law, senior management, expertise, consulting, medicine, anything where authority rests on knowledge. Money is governed by strategy, contracts and precise terms rather than opportunity.
