The King of Pentacles turned effort into something that now runs on its own. He is the deck's most materially successful figure, and the source of his authority is that he actually knows how the thing works.
King of Pentacles upright
Established prosperity and the competence that produced it. A business that runs, an investment that pays, an expert whose advice is worth having, a person who can be relied on absolutely in practical matters.
Act from this position: take the long view, invest in quality, make the decision that will still look right in five years. This card also indicates a patron or benefactor — someone with resources who is inclined to back you. If that person appears, take the meeting; and if you are that person for someone else, back them properly.
King of Pentacles reversed
Reversed, the wealth starts owning him. Greed, a rigidity that will not consider any method but his own, status pursued past the point where it delivers anything, worth measured exclusively in what can be counted.
There is also control exercised through money — generosity that comes with authority attached, support that quietly buys compliance. If you are receiving that, name the price you are paying. If you are giving it, notice the moment your help started being a lever. The material is a good servant on this card and an unusually poor master.
